What is missing and/or needed in Austin's restaurants? Service, style, decor, ethnicity, or menu items? (or anything I've left off!)
~terry #1
Gosh, there is such an abundance of restaurants and choices, this is tough to answer. Seafood resturants?
~KitchenManager #2
What type of seafood restaurant did you have in mind, because I can think of several. WER
~terry #3
Well, I can't think of many, which is why I put it in the form of a question. I've heard of Sea Island and I once ate at a place down near restaurant row near Barton Springs road but I think it's gone. Long John Silver's is an abomination. Oh, OK, there is that place with lobster in the name, they have a location on 183 near IH35. Help me with the name. I had some very pleasant experience there once with a date and once on my own. I haven't tried Sea Island. Maybe you could give me some of your thoughts on this general topic so I could get a better handle on it. I wonder if Stacey is a member of this conference?

I suppose you meant Red Lobster. There is also Landry's which is where The Magic Time Machine formerly was. We used to love it there, but now prefer Pappadeaux's. Our seafood distributor also has a restaurant attached to it over on Airport. Eaves Brothers is the name of our supplier, but I can't remember the name of the restaurant. WER
~terry #5
OK, then, there are some good seafood places. Hmm, now what does Austin lack? I bet a lot of would be restauranteurs are asking that question.
~KitchenManager #6
Pardon me for saying so, but we don't need no new restaurants. Austin has the highest per capita in the state. WER
~terry #7
Have we topeed 3,000 yet?
~stacey #8
Austin does have a very wide variety of restaurants with different degrees of quality. Denver is missing good Cajun places. Even though we're landlocked, we have an amazing number of good quality seafood and Japanese restaurants. I think Austin has an abundant amount of eateries, I wish some of them were not chains. Pappadeux's is delicious but I can go to Houston, Dallas or San Antonio and get the same thing. I like to patronize places where the menu is exclusive and the receipes unique.

topeed should be (sb) topped, as in "has Austin topped 3,000 restuarants yet" John Hoberman runs a used restaurant place and with so many restaurants and so many coming and going I think he's about ready to retire for life. Not a bad business to be in around Austin.

from Garrett via email: No, El Sol y La Luna (the sun and the moon). The good veggie burgers are at Hut's on sixth just east of Lamar... I like the one called the Theta... has pickles, mayonaise, and BBQ sauce. I look the other way regarding the sauce... most BBQ sauces contain anchovies. Hut's has a 2 for 1 special a couple of evenings per week, but I don't recall when. This is in reference to conversation Stacey and I were having about the good Tex Mex place on S Congress and about the veggie burgers at Huts. Hmmm, wonder what night that 2 fer 1 is on?
~stacey #11
call and ask!
~terry #12
Good ideer.
~stacey #13
I'm full of them!
~KitchenManager #14
MORE! MORE! WER
~CotC #15
Greek! Not gyros and crap, I know we can get those. I mean the kind of place with autographed celebrity photos all over the place and yelling and boisterousness from the waitstaff...
~stacey #16
come to Denver... you can get that atmosphere ANYWHERE here!
~terry #17
Ted's Greek on Congress in Austin is pretty authentic.
~stacey #18
Oh yeah, Ted does sound like a pretty Greek name...
~KitchenManager #19
There's also Mykonos over on Burnet, but I've never seen the place boisterous. WER
~stacey #20
Good Greek food here... everyone come visit!
~terry #21
Definitely, will be on my stopover list next time I fly to Calif.
~stacey #22
lemme know.
~terry #23
For sure I will. I need to get out to Calif soon to see my family.
~stacey #24
Where in California?
~terry #25
They're in the East Bay, Walnut Creek. My sister has two houses there and my mom lives in one of them. And my son goes to college in Santa Rosa.
~stacey #26
The son part is a shocker, I didn't know you had children.
~terry #27
Yep. Singular though. Shey has about 45 hours of college credit now.
~stacey #28
What does he want to do with a degree?
~terry #29
He's not completely sure yet, but he's thinking along the lines of a psychology degree.
~stacey #30
Has he always lived in CA?
~terry #31
Yep. I lived out there for quite a while. Had a house in Occidental.
~stacey #32
When did you leave?
~terry #33
I left twice, once around 89 and once around 93. I sold the house in 93 and came back to my place in Texas. Now the house in Occidental is worth three times what I sold it for! Oh well.
~mo #34
We could use a Vegitarian Fast Food Joint.
~mo #35
There is some cool restaurant reviews at http://www.capitol-city.com
~stacey #36
Have you guys fallen victim to the Wrap Craze that has devoured Denver?
~terry #37
Yes, itz called rapido. Cool joint.
~stacey #38
We've got 6 or 7 independent joints, WAY over the top if you ask me.
~terry #39
Only one I know of here.
~stacey #40
lucky you, then it's just a novelty. Funny how things like that work.
~terry #41
By the way, it's wrapido, I spelled it wrong, it's near the Thai place and Wheatsville. Pretty cool.
~stacey #42
we've got one of those and yes, I concur, not too bad. It's when other places just decide to start putting things in tortillas to get in on the craze. No thanks, I'd like my pizza flat, same goes for my veggie burger and salad.
~terry #43
Strangley, Taco Bell has decent wraps.
~stacey #44
San Diego restaurants of note: Harbor House, Kona's (on Mission Beach) and Buffalo Joe's (for veggie burgers and beer in the GasLight District!)
