Have you done a comparative study on this place vis a vis Trudy's?

Hard to compare the two, different styles, Arranda's is closer to Mexican than Tex-Mex. Kinda like Pato's Tacos, over by Fiesta. Ninfas is probably easier to compare to Trudy's, and the wife and I like Ninfa's food a lot more, but we always get crappy service. So, when she's in the mood for Tex-Mex we usually wind up at Tres Amigos. WER

Trudy's... ahhhhh, the memories. Damn you, Paul. You get me so darn hungry at ork! Trudy's over Ninfa's anyday! There is a FABULOUS Tex-Mex place in Denver called Casa Bonita. Don't go for the food, just the atmosphere. The restuarant is HUGE and they have these cliff diving skits in the center room where you're eating. Great entertainment value for kids or those of us that just haven't ceased finding excitment in puppet shows and silly skits!

Have to disagree, as chewy as Chuy's is I'd much rather chew down at Texas Star on Guadalupe street. Like their hubcab encrusted wall though.

oooh! some disagreement. I like living in the fray!! I'd have a difficult time with that one. Chuy's has better salsa (super fresh) but Trudy's has better food! Salsa is muy importante so I dunno.

What is the difference between a mexican restaurant and a tex-mex restaurant?

Tex-Mex defines the genre of Mexican food that you would typically find in Texas versus those found in Mexico (Mexican or Interior), California, New Mexico, etcetera...

For Example:?

Trudy's is still the leader, Stacey. I go there often, but it's rare that I go to Chuys. It's just a comfort zone thing.

Kerbey Lane Cafe is another one of those comfort zones.

And on my most recent visit we found a little place just north of Oltorf to the west (?) of Congress (little alley area opposite side of Congress from Excerds (sp??) Drugstore )... AWESOME breakfast tacos and the most amazing cantaloupe juice!!! They make their own tamales and are pretty well known for them according to their posted accolades... Wish I could remember the name. Oh, and this place is more Mexican than Tex-Mex...

When I try to think of the name of that place, I always think first of Guerro's. But the name is actually Curras. It's good. Always crowded. Always good food. You can sit outside on the patio on the edge of the Travis Heights neighborhood. I don't know about an "alley" though, it's right on Oltorf. I've never had their breakfast, but I've had lunch there many a time. http://www.currasgrillsouth.com/ Not much on their website though, no menu. One of those "under construction" sites.

Nope... different place... the place I'm talking about IS in the alley! Curra's is good though... been there twice. I think they opened right before I left town.

Hmm, then I'm stumped, I've never seen this place. Where is it in relation to Curras?

West. On the other side of South Congress and just behind that bank that looks like a house. South a bit from Magnolia...

I know where you're talking about but don't remember seeing it, next time I'm at that corner I'll be on the look out.

i'm posting this as a public service...because i care, man... if you ever find yourself in the great state of michigan...and you're hungry, whatever...and only mexican food will do,,, evacuate...flee--by plane is best, or locomotive, car, if you must, bicycle, on foot if you have to, just get the hell out as fast as you can but do not under any conditions no matter what they tell you or how much you think you need your texmex, do not ever ever ever ingest what they claim to be texmex here... to these poor deprived bastards, what does it matter? they don't know any better, but to us, we of the faith and the heritage, we who have eaten of mama ninfa's cheese enchiladas and golden rice and lard-laden refried beans-- it is a twisted and immoral joke... it is more than an affront, it is an assault, it is a murderous rampage on our expectations--upon our birthright, in fact, as texans--and the memory of it can linger for years in our psyche's, even stain the sacred store of our tex-mex Collective Memory--and when that's gone, what the hell is left??? (so, yeah, don't try it)...

And I thought it was bad that someone complained about Guerros the other day.
