The Spring webcasts the Atheist Community of Austin Cable Channel 16
program every Sunday morning at 9 am to 10:30 am and this is the place to
talk about that show or Atheism in general, whether or not you believe in
it or not.

Question: How does an atheist service looks like?
Answer: Tune in and find out!
(Tery, you're interests are really fascinating... Buddhism and atheism... Does that mix? I had a teacher, a buddhist monk, who explained to me how e.g. christianity and buddhism are to him not contradicting beliefs. He said, the Pope might object to one being a buddhist christian, but Buddah don't mind if you're a christian buddhist or vice versa.)

Cannot imagine why an Athiest would want to go to Sunday services. Butm that is my problem, not theirs. Our Buddhist "churches" (they go by many names like Daijingu, Hongangi, etc just as we have churches, cathedrals, chapels) but the mainstream ones look very familiar and so would the services. They it is pews, have prayer books and hymnals in the holders in the backs of the seats for the row behind to use etc. All very familiar. Even their funerals. Very westernized.

The Atheist Experience is on at this moment and we're webcasting it via a RealMovie and a slide on our page with RealAudio. You can see it either way. Call 512-472-2255 if you want to comment.

Atheist Community of Austin (Godfree) Sun, Feb 6, 2000 (10:15) 11 lines
Good morning! It's Sunday, 8:45, and I'm posting this from the
community-access computers. We're just about to go out on the air.
Yes, we do a TV show on Cable Access, called The Atheist Experience.
Thanks to the Spring, it will be seen internationally.
What's the purpose of the show? Well, it's to give people exposure
to what "real" atheists are like. We're not all Madelyn Murray
O'Hare; most of us aren't disgruntled iconoclasts. What we are, is
the newest minority in America, a nation strongly dominated by
religious people with a very serious bias against the non-religious.
We're not here to "convert" folks to atheism. There are
already many atheists. The
Atheist Community of
Austin
does this show to promote positive atheism, to show that our lives
are quite rich in meaning and conscientious behavior.
Our philosophical outlook turns our inquiry and our aspirations to
such things as life extension. Freed from a superstition that it's
somehow "evil" or "arrogant" to want healthier longer existences,
atheists have much to offer the human race.
We'd really like to hear from ALL people-- this is a live call-in
show, every Sunday morning at 9 a.m. CST. So, whether you're part of
a flock or you're a dyed-in-the-wool unbeliever, I hope you'll tune
in to Spring.net's REAL AUDIO feed, and give us a live call-in.

Alas, it was 5:30 am when the notice was posted and I did not see it until ProBowl half time. Perhaps next week if I can get up that early...

Why do you folks even call yourselves "atheists" - that's odd to me. You don't believe there is a deity, fine. But you describe yourselves through defining the absence of that deity. As if that were a lack you'd still perceive.
I think, either one is reasonable folks, or one isn't. Doesn't matter where one plays pool, no?

I just wanted to say I really regret going to satellite for one reason. The Atheist Experience is on Time Warner and no dish carries local access TV. I can get local networks but not my very favorite program. I really wish spring.net had you on more because I log on weekly and am disappointed when there is no live audio feed. I am going to address the last persons post from my perspective only. It's a bad presumption that something exists when there is no proof or logic. Not believing in ghosts isn't considered unusual. Ghosts don't exist so to say I was denying them is faulted. You can't deny what doesn't exist. The term atheist isn't exactly a well recepted word either. Other words that some people use are freethinker, infidel, humanist..etc. Atheist is just a more direct way of saying I have an understanding of theism and reject it. For me personally atheist stands out. It literally makes a challenging stance. That's just my interpretation. Hope to see Jeff and the gang on my computer some
ime soon.

Thanks. I didn't expect a response and a conscious effort to get the audio feed fixed. I will definitely tune in Sunday at 10 am. No, I unfortunately still live in the atheist closet for the most part. I realize they strongly suggest our 10% of the population come out but I already get so much negativity from the idea that it's easiest(sadly) to just remain pretty silent about it. My wife and select family know but my own brother won't speak to me because of my philisophical choice. He links it to the typical stereotypes as immoral, haven't tried hard enough to read the bible with an open mind or just fighting authority for selfishness. He recently became a fundamentalist so he's the biggest challenge in my conclusion that I am athiest. I have seriously contemplated going to Furr's or the bagel shop but maybe someday when I am ready. Just thought I get a few points out with your question as well.
Look forward to the show on Sunday even if I just have to listen to it.
