NetAttach -- NetAttach stakes its claim as being the Internet's
first second-generation web agent -- an agent above and beyond
first-generation clients like WebWhacker, SmartMarks, and
WebWatch. Does NetAttach live up to its hype and thereby render
obsolete the competition for the time being? The answer is a
definitive yes. By integrating unique and powerful features that
bring the web to your desktop at unprecedented speeds and with a
minimum of effort, NetAttach is indeed the consummate web
agent. Like its predecessors, NetAttach offers web site archival
capabilities, personal spiders that automatically download
web-related information for you, and routine comparison checks for
notifying you when your favorite web sites have been updated. The
initial innovation that distances NetAttach from the competition is
its filtering agent, which will automatically scan web sites and
download only the information important to you. For example,
NetAttach will, at scheduled intervals, check a web site for revised
information. Any new information that meets your needs is then
downloaded and presented to you in the form of a news brief when
you run the client. The key feature here is NetAttach's ability to
identify differences on Web pages and then filter through to you
only the information that you deem critical. Another of
NetAttach's innovations is its implementation of these functions
using advanced desktop-server technology, which in turn provides
higher levels of performance.
A third major feature of NetAttach, and perhaps its most useful, is
the ability to scan sites and identify the occurrence of specific
information. Using its Smart Search function, NetAttach scans a
web page (and several levels below if you wish) and notes the
occurrence of specific text patterns. Think of this as your own
personal search engine for each of your favorite web sites. Just
enter the information you wish to find and allow NetAttach to
easily detect the presence of the data you are interested in. This
results in the generation of a Site Map whereby the entries
containing the matches are identified. Additionally, the matches are
consolidated in a separate listing from which you can quickly jump
to the web pages with the matching text. And since the web site has
been retrieved and stored on your hard disk, you are able to receive
the web page or pages immediately. NetAttach delivers each of
these features and more, and at the same time it does so with easy
to understand instructions (including a helpful tutorial) and a cool
interface. In short, welcome to the new generation of web agent
technology -- after using NetAttach you'll never want to go back.
Pros: Second-generation web agent technology offers impressive,
unprecented features
Cons: Some features could be more intuitive, the competition is
closing the gap quickly
New: This is the initial review for NetAttach

Although this tool produces nice looking reports, you don't have nearly the control over which pages get downloaded that you do with a tool like Open Market Express. Open Market lets you set detailed filters on the pages you want to download and the pages you want to skip which means you only get the ones you need.

I just wanted to point out a memory leak problem with the 32-bit version of NetAttache which is documented on their homepage. They recommend using the 16-bit version until it is fixed and to use the 32-bit app only as a demo.

32 bit? Do they have a new Beta out? Their last 32 bit Netattache had a 15 Aug end of use date under its Beta program. I have not heard of a updated 32 bit version out yet.

Ahhh... I checked back in at Netattache's (Tympani's) Website.
They have indeed posted the 32 bit version of Netattache Beta 20. Posted 14 Aug.
They also have a FIX for the memory leakage problem, which is available on the Microsoft Site. It is called, Kernal Update (KRNLUPD.EXE). If your using Win95 get the 32 bit version (Don't forget to uninstall the 16 bit version first if you have it on your system).

Hi, I'm new to this discussion group. I hope I have not done anything out-of-the etiquette in entering this discussion.
This question is for John: Where exactly in MS web site did you find KRNLUPD.exe? I roamed all over and could not locate the file.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in answering, Yeti. The original link started from the Tympani Web site (NetAttache's web page) and goes to Microsoft's Home Page.
At MS it is found in the "support" pages. If you still don't find it, let me know and I'll put the link in my next msg.

I've found a problem using Netscape 3.0 Gold beta 5a (for Win 95), and NetAttache Pro 32-bit 1.0 beta 21a. Fairly often, I get an Application Error dialog with a couple of different addresses. Saying OK closes up all of NetAttache, except for the Server. I plan to try again later with Netscape 3.0 Gold beta 8, and if that doesn't work, I'll go to the 16-bit version.

Pros: Does a great job of getting the files.
Cons: 1) Stores results in a proprietary file format, instead of just placing on your hard drive the way files appear on the web.
2) Why does this thing have to connect to my ISP so I can view my brief
"off-line"???? That's not what I call "offline" viewing.
3) When you view your collected pages it pollutes your results by putting
it's own header "plug" at the top of every web page.
I'll keep looking for what I want. Maybe someone will get it right!!!

Excuse me Allan, I just saw your post about Netattache. In reference to the three points you make against it, only the first point is right.
#2, Off-line viewing is just that. Using your ISP for a psuedo-server is nothing new. Your system does not have to be "online" for you to view the results of using Netattache.
#3, The header you mentioned only appears when you are viewing thru the psuedo-server. There is an icon to the top that allows you to go straight to the document via the Internet/Network.
BTW, Have you seen any program that does a better job?
