July Overview Astrological overview for the month: The big news is a series of "bookend" eclipse occurring at the first and the last of the month. Then, right smack in the middle, there's another one. And the beginning of the month is a Cancer time, too, and this sign is intimately associated with the Moon. But beside the lunar and solar cycles, there's also Jupiter, sitting still at the very entrance to Gemini, and I'm sure this is causing a degree of consternation there, like having a friend stuck half in and half out the front door. Mercury goes direct in Cancer around the same time of the middle eclipse, and Cancer is stuck with Mr. Mars for the duration of the month, too. Venus moves from Cancer right on through Leo, and that's going to bring a little bit of welcome relief of sorts, to certain fire signs. "But what's that all mean?" Read on. The influences in your life will leave you feeling like I did, one fateful morning while standing in line to get my hard earned American Dollars converted to English Pounds. Between the eclipses, the retrogrades, and the position of Jupiter, you've got a lot of influences pushing on you. What does it feel like? It's like standing in that line, after an overnight coach flight -- sitting next to someone who insisted on reading a book the whole time instead of sleeping -- although, sleeping on an overnight flight to England is a little difficult at best. So compound this image with lots of Jet Lag. Then imagine yourself in in a foreign land where the native tongue is supposed to be one that you understand. Then imagine yourself standing behind a guy speaking flawless French, holding onto his French girlfriend, and the pair of them are wearing Cowboy Boots. Manly Footwear. Pointy toes, riding heels, the real thing. Probably manufactured in West Texas. There's just something which doesn't quite add up. It left me with a little bit of a shock, almost too much, and it left me at a point where I couldn't say anything. This is a month where you're going to find yourself, more than once, staring at some vision, a scene, some event, where you just can't quite form words to explain the incongruities. Don't try. Remember, it's just passing moment of confusion, and it will all make sense (maybe not) later. Just pull out your money and hand it over to the counter agent. Sometimes, like this month, it's better not to ask questions. And as long as your handing out money, remember your astrology buddy. You know the number. Taurus : At this point in my life, I have written so much about Mercury Retrograde, and I have been haunted so much by what I've written that I loathe having to ever type those words again. Or utter them in a sentence. Of course, Mercury Retrograde is a natural cycle of beginnings, middles, and endings. There is no surprise there. And this month really doesn't hold too many surprises for Taurus. There's a long month punctuated by a series of reviews while you go back and visit past places and events. This might be literal, like a trip back to the country (or county in some cases) where you were raised, or it might be on that big screen video system in your Taurus brain (with surround sound). Part of this is Mercury, part of this the eclipses, and part of this is the end of the Saturn season. Now, there is a degree of long sought after reward coming up -- better yet, there's a good chance that this reward gets here before the end of the month. This is an opportunity to see a culmination of the review sessions you've experienced all month long. Wait until Mercury gets out of the way, though, before you announce that you've got the whole picture in focus. And don't spend that big check until it clears the bank. Gemini : Remember when I was admonishing Gemini to "chop wood and carry water"? It's an old Zen expression, and it suggests that you roll up your sleeves and do a little bit of dirty work, that manual labor stuff. I was stuck on a road crew once with a Gemini, and that particular character made the work go a lot easier because of the non=ADstop entertainment Gemini factor. I did notice, however, that I seemed to be using the shovel a little more than the Gemini. This month, the only planet really in your sign is Jupiter. The Mercury thing is at the first of the month, and then there's a Venus thing a little later. This adds up to some hard work around the house. And I'm back to the idea that you could be doing something good like gardening. Or pick your choice of home improvement ideas. Even though the retrograde and assorted astrological events are over before the end of the month, and even though the final third of the month is "supposed" to be good, there's still a catch. Throttle back on the Gemini ability to talk about how good things are until next month. These eclipse patterns are going to wind you up some, and you don't need to be like that Gemini I worked with on the road crew, more talk than action. Cancer : What would you do if you won the lottery? The first thing that comes to my Cancer's mind is pay off some old debts, maybe spruce up the trailer a little, see about getting new blocks for the car in the parking space (it's a classic you know, the car, not the blocks), and celebrate a little. Got the correct imagine here? I'm telling you about an uproariously happy time. And I'm trying to stress this sort of thought pattern for you. What with the big hue and cry about the eclipses, and the thought that this stuff is actually going to work out, there is a winning combination in this month, if you are willing to look for it. "What chew mean, 'winning combination'? That like numbers to win with?" Not exactly. If I could actually pick winning lottery numbers, would I be writing this stuff? But it does mean that you've got a weird, lucky break which comes from some corner of the sky where you least expect it. And there's a chance, actually, three chances, that you've got to make this work. Since the odds are really against a big lottery win, I can't promise that. But there is an opportunity or two (or three) for similar type of gain for you. You benefit from acting like you can win this month. Leo : This eclipse pattern, this month, is compounded by a couple of factors. You've got Venus dragging herself all over you right now. The last time that happened, it wasn't exactly a happy time, so it's not like you're all smiles about this one, either. And the pernicious, but ultimately harmless Mercury thing is happening in the sign that comes right before the Majestic Leo, again, this isn't the most opportune of times. Finally, there's that eclipse pattern itself. But wait, before you shoot the astrologer, or even before you consider taking aim on my beady little head, let me remind you that some of this works out to be pretty good. There's a long haul to the good stuff, though, and it's matter of keeping yourself together until we all arrive at that good stuff. Now, let's review some facts: no one knows how to party like Leo. There is a great window for a Leo like party coming at the end of the month. Getting to the end of the month is going to be a chore. The harder you work at seemingly mindless tasks and redundant errors in the first part of the month only serves to make the victory at the end of the month feel ever so much sweeter. Virgo : Mercury Retrogrades usually affect you guys pretty hard. It's not the planet itself, not this time, it's everyone else. And as much as you would like to just "go to your room" and lock the door, it doesn't always work that way. Until the sun slides into Leo, really late in the month, you're going to find that you get an undue amount of attention. And with the planets behaving in this fashion, it's not exactly the kind of attention that you want. It's nice to be loved, but it sometimes hurts a little when you find out that you're being loved for the wrong reasons. And then there's the "emergency" urgency which comes with this month. You find yourself stuck cleaning up other folks' messes. It's not exactly what you had in mind for the month. But there's a bright spot to this, if you can adjust your Virgo way of thinking, because this sort of emergency clean up service is right up your Virgo alley way. So it's no use trying to hide from it all, and let's face it, no one will help us have better time than a good Virgo this month. Enjoy what you can of the eclipses. Libra : I'm judiciously not quoting from Shakespeare's King Lear this month, although, for a small section of the sky, the dire words about eclipse and portents thereof would certainly fit for some of my Libra friends. Regrettably, it's just going to be a weird month. Best thing to do is grab the family, or the kids, or the wife, or the significant other, and head yourself right on out to a vacation spot. I don't want to look like I'm a die hard Texan, but the Gulf Coat (oft referred to as the "Third Coast") would be an ideal choice this month. Lazy days frolicking on the beach, summer nights in the open air cantinas, work in a little fishing, get one of the good Gulf Coast guides to take you out for a little deep sea adventure, it just looks too inviting right now. What you need to be careful about, though, is checking the voice mail, or the office e-mail, or anything that remotely resembles that sort of endeavor. This is supposed to be a vacation month. And the more time you spend out of touch, the better you will feel. Mercury is guaranteed to make you feel like you're out of it, so why not make it literal? And those problems back home that you have no control over? You can have the perfect excuse this month: "I was on vacation, and I didn't know my pager (cell phone, computer, global positioning device) was out of range...." Scorpio : I keep a rotating stock of reference books on a shelf right over my desk. This collection of reference material varies every so often. Sometimes, depending on my moods, it's got the annals of great Western Civilization as the bulk of the contents. Sadly, that turns out to be a bunch of stuff written in the last two thousand years by dead white guys. Other times, I have some trashy material, Science Fiction, Romance, or even some New Age stuff, perhaps something like the classic "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones." In the Northern Hemisphere, it's the heights of the summer months, and it's hot. And with the present disposition of the planets, I would suggest that the best bet for right now is to rotate your personal literary reference shelf, like I do. You need something different for a little while. When Mercury is retrograde, you're going to find yourself forced back to the all time classics, the "dead white guys" material. But keep one eye looking forward because there is some good stuff coming up. The effect of the Mercury period is not as deleterious on you as it is on other folks. And it's not such a bad thing, either. It's going to give you chance, as this month gets a little older, to broaden some of the material that you're reading. Like rotating stock on my reference shelf, you want to consider finding something a little less filling to read right now. Around here, it's called "summer reading material" but you can call it whatever you want. Try using something from a different genre just to make sure you've got a good way of looking at things this month. If you need further suggestion, two authors readily come to mind. While their material is packaged as summer reading, I'm sure the Scorpio side of you can see through the fluff. (Suggested authors this month? Rudolfo Anya and Leslie Marmon Silko.) Sagittarius : The first part of this month is simple because it deals with a situation, astrologically speaking, where you are concerned with the Mercury Retrograde effect. That means old business, old friends, past significant others, former scenarios, and perhaps even some bait left over a from a long time ago. In most of these examples, it's really not much of a problem. Like my tattoo, though, with a little arrow forever pointing forward, your inherent Sagittarius nature wants to keep covering new ground rather than digging up the old stuff and examining yet one more time. That's part of the problem this month, because the first part of the month will unearth some old stuff which really needs to be looked at. The second part of the month, and it divides itself neatly along a Mercury line, has to do with opening up new business opportunities and crossing territories that offer wide open vistas that you never considered before. You're going to find yourself back to the true nature of your Sagittarius self as the sudden change in a planet's apparent direction swings from "old stuff" to "new horizons." What more could a Sagittarius ask for? Capricorn : Being heavily affiliated the planet Saturn has some good points. I'm not sure what these points are because I couldn't find them in any of the modern astrology text books. But if you'll humor me this month, I think that you will find that you can make it through the weirdness that the universe is shoveling your way. I realize that the term "shoveling" might have some pejorative denotations for the way you feel like most of this month, but to be fair, the planets have delivered an old load of material which desperately needs your review and revision process. It's like one of my old grammar teachers -- the guy would stop reading one of my papers whenever he encountered an egregious typographical mistake. The temptation this month is to attempt to fix more than one mistake at a time. That doesn't work. The correct course of action, against my better judgment, is to correct that single mistake, print the paper again, and shoot it back. You need to pay attention to this process. Of course, if you're not careful, plotting, plodding and even pedantic with your work habits, then this all goes out the window. Fix the problems, one at a time. It might feel like you're using a spade compared to the planets' shovel, but more than one of my teachers has suggested that I used a shovel. Stick to fixing one problem at a time because otherwise, you're going to find that you get as scattered as the average Sagittarius scholar. Aquarius : In the midst of the summer (it is summer in Texas), there's always a bit of lull in the activity. We get these days when there is nothing better to do than sit on the porch, in the evening's fading twilight, sip a cool glass of ice tea, and look out over the front yard. The first stars of the night begin to creep into the short darkness. The rose colored sunset fades to a deep amber hue, and you begin thinking that life is good again because the AC is broken, and now that the sun's down, you can get cooled off. There's a window of time, this month, and it's like those short summer nights in Texas, it's not a very long period when you've got some work you can get out of the way. The problem you're facing this month, and this gets a lot more pronounced as the month gets older, is that you're sorely tempted to spend the cool evenings of the month sipping that tea instead of tending to what needs to be tended to. When you get presented with a "window of opportunity" this month, and there are several, then take advantage of said window. You're tempted to avoid it all today, and that's not an advisable course of action. Pisces : There comes a point in every person's life when you have no choice (the plot device is such that it always appears like you have no choice), you can only take so much, and you reach that breaking point, and suddenly you're a little ballistic, you know, careening around with no control surfaces which seem to work. There is at least one school of astrological thought which suggests that you can't control a Pisces anyway which only contributes an unsteady image to this already unstable imagery. The eclipse can be good for you, but you've got to be willing to work with what's there. Deal with what's been dealt to you this month.
