Semantics are as big a part of philosophy in this here conference as anything else is, so start defining your terms that we may better communicate to one another the meaning behind our words.

Please, no offense is intended by this topic. I just see it as a necessity, possibly for me most of all. In fact, I had to look these two up today. Acumen: Quickness and accuracy of judgement; keeness of insight. Redoubtable: 1) Arousing fear or awe; formidable. 2) Worthy of respect or honor.

ethics n. moral philosophy moral a. concerned with right and wrong conduct; virtuous (pl.)person's moral conduct esp. sexual conduct
~KitchenManager #3
ethics: 1)The study of the general nature of morals and of the specific moral choices to be made by the individual in his relationship with others. 2)The rules or standards governing the conduct of the members of a profession. morals: Rules or habits of conduct, especially sexual conduct, with reference to standards of right and wrong.

Ah ha! the 'standards' part is where we get all mucked up! Who sets 'em and why? Morals (in that definition) certainly vary between cultures but do you believe in a universal code of ethics (to govern tose morals)?

(at the risk of being beheaded) i think hemingway may've had it right (for once) when he said something about what's right being what one "feels good after", wrong what one "feels bad after"... (morality being the most personal of issues, i think)...
~KitchenManager #6
but what if you have no conscience... does that make you immoral, ammoral, or simply lacking in morals...hmmm...
~stacey #7
my students often say things like, but ms. vura, it's more fun to be bad. outta the mouths of babes!

candor: 1) Frankness of expression; straightforwardness. 2) Freedom from prejudice; impartiality. honesty: 1) The quality or condition of being honest; integrity. 2) Truthfulness; sincerity: in all honesty. 3) Chastity 4) A plant, Lunaria annua, native to Eurasia, cultivated for its fragrant purplish flowers and round, flat, papery, silver-white seed pods. truthfulness: 1) The quality or condition of consistently telling the truth; honesty. 2) The state of corresponding to reality; truth.

Wish there was such a thing as a reality pill that one could take to keep one focused.
~KitchenManager #11
anything in particular out of focus?
~riette #12
Oh, nothing more than the usual self-resentment etc. etc. etc. When I hate myself, I can't be creative, and I can't concentrating on the things that are more important than my stupid ugly self. A big bore, nothing else.
~ratthing #13
