Ideas for new domain names ending in .com or .net. To see if a name is taken type 'whois ' at a UNIX prompt or look it up on http://www.internic.net 's whois searcher. We need your ideas for names to register to help make money to support the Spring, a lot of the obviously great names are taken, but there are still some good ones out there and sometimes good ones expire and open up again. Your ideas?
~terry #1

~terry #7
Both taken. To find out do a !whois dotnet.net at the shell prompt or check on the www.internic.net website. Keep the name ideas coming!!
~KitchenManager #8
I'm at home, so I can't telnet... didn't know you could check on the web... hehe...
~terry #9
Yep, it will be under whois on the internic website. Anyone got any insanelygreat.com web names? howaboutit.com?
~stacey #10
why can't you telnet from home?!?!
~stacey #11
I mean... if I can do it...
~KitchenManager #12
AOL...
~riette #13
Aching Out Loud
~stacey #14
oh. (no ability to telnet through the RUN command?)
~KitchenManager #15
not yet...need a second internet hookup from home, which may or may not coexist peacefully with AOL... but, hey, I got you on from home... (most telnet programs don't work with AOL's tcp/ip stack...)
~stacey #16
Absolutely Outta Luck
~KitchenManager #17
pretty much sums it up, yes...
~terry #18
altavista.com just sold for $3 million to Compaq.
~KitchenManager #19
oh, my..... at my current rate of pay, I'll make that in 120 years...
~terry #20
Here are the two I thought up and registered Sunday: silkcloth.com silkclothing.com What do you think? I have a friend in the silk clothing business. Other ideas?
~riette #21
And I thought it was all about your fetishes. How dissappointing. hayroller.com silkyhay.com rollin'hay.com rollin'terry.com silkyterrybabe.com hiterry.com wonderingwhilerollinginthehay.com howyou'vebeen.com
~terry #22
hay, not bad. roller another one.
~riette #23
That says it all.
~terry #24
What about austinticity.com
~riette #25
That sounds a tit like the six million dollar man's birth place or something!
~riette #26
HA-HA!!!! Sorry about the tit that should be bit - seem to be having my boobies tied around my fingers today!! Like the woman who could not say an R, and explained that her tongue got tied around her R's. Get it?!
~stacey #27
no, but it is all pretty damn funny anyway... (you seem in a GREAT mood Riette!)
~terry #28
Could we get a visual on that, Riette?
~riette #29
R's like in arse - British English, get the double meaning now, Stace? And, yes, I'm in a great mood!!!!! Heeeeeeee-haaaaaawwwwwww! Which one, Terry? The first or the second? For the second I might have to become a contortionist or something first, because as I look at it now my backside seems lower down than I always thought it was.
~terry #30
Both.
~riette #31
Hmmm . . . awe twying vewy vewy hawd - tongue bit wathew wifficult . . . aauch . . . thank Gawd I just had a showew . . . onwy awle to type wif one fingew now that my woowies awe tied wound 'em . . . no, $wit! Too damwed uncomfowtawle . . . ugh ugh ugh . . . ooh!! POP!SPIT!ZING! That's much better now. See Terry? I managed it!! But for a second there I really hought I had my tongue stuck where it was, and got overwhelmed in visions of brown. That was scary. And I didn't know what to do with my feet, so I used them to hold my head in the right place . . . I think you'll be glad to hear I shall not apply this as a hay rolling position ever.
~terry #32
I'm just trying to visualize all this (rotfl).
~riette #33
I was going to say, now it's your turn to have a go, but you don't have boobies! Wonder what else you could get tied round your finger. Will have to think about that one . .. .
~terry #34
I almost lost thespring.com but I reregistered it today. So pretty soon you can type thespring into your browser without the dot ending and the http garbage. Also registered gospring.com along with thespring.com Keep those creative ideas for names coming?
~ratthing #35
terry how much would it cost me for you to get me ratthing.com and host it on your servers? i also own l-comm.com, and was thinking of parking it on your servers as well. what are the initial costs and the monthly/recurring costs?
~wolf #36
got a question: if i wanted to have my own domain, say, uh, midnightwolf.com, what would the purpose for it be? i mean, how big is a domain, would it be all mine? would i have to work real hard at it? besides the initial cost of owning the name, what else would it cost me?
~ratthing #37
wolfie, when you have a domain name, it is essentially a single site on the internet that you can do with as you please. you can host a web site on it, you can put files on it for people to download, you can host conferences on it, you can host whatever you want on it. the only limitations are 1) the abilities of the server machine on which you are hosting your site, 2) the amount of time and money you have to work on the site. i want to have a site to do all sorts of things. right now i have a web site at www.l-comm.com but i no longer own a company called L Comm, so i would just like to start ratthing.com for my own personal use.
~wolf #38
well, i did look for midnightwolf.com and it is free. what about ratthing.com? and what kind of server would i need? i mean, could i do this from my personal computer at home? and would the thing need to be on all the time? (i'm utterly clueless)!
~terry #39
!whois ratthing.com No match for "RATTHING.COM".
~ratthing #40
technically, you would be able to run your server off of any machine connected to the internet. ideally, you want a machine connected to the net 24/7 and on all the time.
~ratthing #41
terry, my church has a website at www.sanfernandocathedral.org. we are thinking of moving it somewhere else that is cheaper. we are currently having it hosted by corporate web (www.corporate-web.com) what would you charge?
~terry #42
For a church, $15 per month plus whatever Jeff or Tami's set up fee is to put it on the server, if you put it on the server it's free for the setup. Church's get 50% off our regular $30 / month dedicated website fee.
~ratthing #43
i have a meeting with the Rector of the cathedral on sunday. i will let you know! meantime, what do you charge to snarf up ratthing.com and place it on your servers?
~terry #44
Same thing. YOu'd have to pay the nic $70 for two years, provide and organization name and contact, and pay a small set up fee. IN your case, it would be free, a tradeoff for your copious assistance and ideas. You could do the setup if you felt up to it. I believe the directions are in the projects conference, which is the place where we organize various websites and jobs. Jeff Kramer set up a webserver on access.spring.net for all our new sites. Do you have an account there, Ray?
~ratthing #45
i dont think so, but i will check. thanks, terry.
~ratthing #46
terry, i dont have access to access.spring.net. i just need to know hostnames and netaddresses for InterNIC. i can do the rest myself (i think!).
~KitchenManager #47
go to http://www.internic.net and search for spring.net, Ray, it'll give you the info you need to register other sites, I think...
~terry #48
I'll set you up with a ratthing account on access.
~ratthing #49
wer, thanks. took care of it all on internic! thanks, terry.
~wer #50
Terry, did we ever figure out if I have an account on access? And if I do, what's my login name?
~ratthing #51
wer, i just looked in /etc/passwd on access and you are not listed.
~KitchenManager #52
that does explain why none of my log-ins work over there...
~ratthing #53
if terry sez ok i will add you immediately.
~KitchenManager #54
can't do anything with it right now, I was just wondering... wouldn't have a spare Pentium that you need to store in Austin do you, Ray?
~wolf #55
haha. yeah, lemme pull it outta my back pocket!! i wish i understood all this computer mumbo jumbo.
~ratthing #56
if i did i'd send it right up!
~KitchenManager #57
yeah, well, at least I asked... hopefully one will be purchased for our house sometime before March... (of 1999, that is!)
~wolf #58
oooo, could we possibly have a clue as to what santa is bringing to the wer household? hmmmmm?
~KitchenManager #59
not THAT soon, unfortunately...
~terry #60
If you had to rename the spring something other than spring.net what would it be? I've thought about springfolks.com It would be nice to be a dot com instead of a dot net, of course we can be as many names as we want all pointing to the same site. Suggestions? (it can't be an already registered name).
~aschuth #61
I like .net, because it doesn't sound so corporate. I mean, yeah, you own this, and there are costs and cash flows, so there IS a biz side, but the name should rather propagate the web-culture the Spring is. This is our "Home on the Net", where the browers graze, etc. P.S.: I'm not sure a topic like "A wants Spring.net" should be exclusiveky discussed in Inner. Thanks for dragging this out here into the sun shine. We non-Inners see it, and when we know something is going on, but can't put the finger on it, it might upset the populace.
~terry #62
No, it would not be upsetting. But I can't go in to details yet. .com names have the advantage that you type one word in the browser window without the http://www. and the .com. That's one big reason why I'd like to have a .com or several .com names for this community. Ideas? Suggestions on names?
~aschuth #63
"No, it would not be upsetting. But I can't go in to details yet." - I appreciate that, as this is wheelin'-dealin' biz, and it asks for mucho discretion. I understand this. Many golden geese fly away when people discuss how to cut it up before getting their hands on one... Still, seeing people post in a topic with the mentioned name, but general public being in the dark... Well, got me thinking what you were up to - nothing untoward, I'm sure, it's just the suspense and thrill...
~terry #64
Hang tight. It's nothing to worry about! But I can't talk about it yet.
~infospryte #65
These names are not registered yet: spring-world.com my-spring.com springchat.com thoughtspring.com talkspring.com mouthspring.com spring-web.com (However, springchicken.com IS already registered.)
~infospryte #66
These names are not registered yet, either: spring-o-rama.com springviews.com mondospring.com
~MarciaH #67
mondospring is a really classy name. Summons up all sorts of images...!
~terry #68
And infospryte.com is still available.
~aschuth #69
MondoSpring sounds like a weird 70s b-movie title to me... TheSpring.whatever ?
~MarciaH #70
Terry, I really like infospryte.com I think it could be important in the future if we do not want to keep it - all sorts of web sites are offering information - this would be a natural for it!
~amy #71
Wow. It is getting really hard to find the dotcoms anymore. I do whoises for fun every few months, but since the last time, it seems like hardly any I think of are still available. However, I think these might possibly be valuable soon, especially since in the next year they say 40% of all small businesses will have a web presence, so the e-commerce-type names will be hot. loveyourdress.com loveyourtie.com Did not continue checking in this vein.
~riette #72
You mean there isn't a loveyourtits.com left?
~terry #73
loveyourtits is still available. Should I grab them, er, it?
~riette #74
Ha-ha!!! I KNEW it would still be available! Yep, this is the one time you get to grab them before fondling!!
~terry #75
OK I'll be nice to the three of you.
~aschuth #76
;=}
~aschuth #77
Terry, what about Spring + the new domain dot whatevers? .arts .firm ...
~stacey #78
hey ya! how come we don't just create a whole new dot category for ourselves!?!?! (and how do we do that??)
~aschuth #79
Talk the folks at Internic into it ( www.internic.com or .org??? ). Or, in other words, fugeddahaboudit! Big international orgs convene, and agree on stuff like that.
~cfadm #80
BTW, springsite.com is not registered, either.
~MarciaH #81
I would check on springnet.com and springcom.net if I knew where to check...
~cfadm #82
http://www.networksolutions.com/ or do a whois check from telnet...
~MarciaH #83
Thank you, kindly!
~MarciaH #84
Neither are registered: springcom.net springcom.net
~MarciaH #85
pardon...being distracted momentarily. Neither springcom.net nor springnet.com are registered...
~MarciaH #86
(...and stop thinking those evil thoughts about the posters who just cannot get it right the first time...and stop laughing, too!)
~riette #87
suppressing a snigger with both hands
~Isabel #88
Don't worry Marcia! I never get it right the first time! :-D
~terry #89
Thanks, both those names have applied for. My friend Pat McGuire jost sold his name, wirelessvideo.com, for $120,000. Not a bad day's work for someone who's been trying to bootstrap a little business for years.
~riette #90
$hit, you're right there! How much would a pair of kids get me?
~MarciaH #91
With kids, you gotta wait till they ripen and fall off the vine - like fine vintage grapes. Then you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor...if you are very lucky. I do like InfoSpryte.com. It has magic about it. Beats Jeeves.com anyday!
~riette #92
Yep, InfoSpryte.com is cool. Yesterday I was seriously considering selling the kids or donating them for Stacey's run. It was a cop day. I felt like a cop all day. But today was great, so today I'll keep them.
~MarciaH #93
Terry, apply for InfoSpryte.com, please...or the guy who was using it...! It is too choice to let the riff raff in the outer cyber space get ahold of it...!
~terry #94
It has been applied for, and, speaking of names I just got a bill for firth.com and I also went out and spent $125 on a 9 gb. hard drive so I'll have to fire up the pledge drive. I bet I could raise $35 from the firthians and maybe some more for the hard drive. I just made the quarterly $1287 payment to ddc.net for our server colocation so that's not an issue for another 2 months.
~infospryte #95
cops-and-donuts.com as well as copsanddonuts.com are not registered neither are foodspryte.com sexpspryte.com wordspryte.com sexhurt.com
~MarciaH #96
sexhurt???!!! It should not hurt!
~MarciaH #97
Guess that means I put out a plea for funds now?! Will do so on Springfolks and other message boards of which I am a memeber and see what I can do for you.
~terry #98
Thanks, I got a $35 bill for firth.com and bought that hard drive. I'm still waitng for the first Visto check, but it should be over $200.
~MarciaH #99
Please post the address again for me...so we will all know! and to whom to make the check payable...
~terry #100
Paul Terry Walhus The Spring Rt 2 Box 56r Cedar Creek TX 78612 payable to either The Spring or Paul Terry Walhus
~infospryte #101
Suggestion/idea: Terry, take your celeb site names and put them up for auction at ebay. Go with a minimum bid somewhere between 70 and 200 dollars and take bids for thirty days. You probably won't get as much as you could with an active site, but you might be able to sell them for something that way, especially now that you have to pay for a site when you register it.
~terry #102
What do you think suzyamis would bring on ebay?
~KarenR #103
Terry: I'm sure you've been following this item, but I thought I'd post the latest from The Hollywood Reporter. IMVHO, this legislation wouldn't stand up if challenged in court. Who are they kidding? Total restraint of trade. Who are they going to go after next? Real estate developers (virtual real estate too)? puhleez! Or maybe I should legally change my name to IBM and then take them to court for exploiting MY name! ;-D Karen House evicting cybersquatters (Wed., Oct. 27, 1999) By Brooks Boliek WASHINGTON -- Hollywood's glitterati may be able to rest a little easier because Congress approved legislation Tuesday aimed at protecting the famous from cybersquatters who register Internet domain names simply to resell them or use them for unscrupulous purposes (HR 10/26). While the bill, approved in the House without dissent, was originally designed to protect companies with trademarks or servicemarks from cybersquatters, it was expanded to include celebrities after a concerted effort by Hollywood's creative community. Hollywood's luminaries wanted to be included in the bill because they found their names being hijacked by people who were seeking to make a quick buck or were using them to attract business to their sites. The Internet address www.BradPitt.com contains a blatant solicitation, www.SharonStone.com directs people to a porno site, and three men reportedly attempted to sell USA Networks chief Barry Diller his domain name for $10 million. Studios also have had trouble preventing people from registering domain n mes for their movies. "Current law is opening the commerce-rich Internet to pirates, crippling legitimate businesses and fattening the wallets of cyber-frauds," said Rep. James Rogan, R-Calif., who co-sponsored the bill with Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va. Rogan said it would shore up consumer confidence in legitimate brand names and discourage fraudulent electronic commerce. The studios, led by Disney, balked at including famous people's names in the legislation but relented under pressure from lawmakers. The studios feared that the measure would give Hollywood stars too much control over the registration of Internet domain names that they might want to use but agreed to language worked out among Rogan, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif. The bill approved by the House includes language expressly forbidding the registration of "a famous personal name" as a URL if the buyer has "unfair" intentions, such as selling it for profit, using it for pornography or misleading the public by falsely suggesting celebrity endorsement. It would be up to the courts to decide what constitutes a famous name. People who have the same name as a celebrity would not be in violation for registering their name. In August, the Senate approved a similar bill, but the Clinton administration opposed the legislation, saying courts have been friendly to the victims of cybersquatting and it would be better to allow courts to develop a body of case law in the area. The administration also expressed concern that the legislation could invite other countries to enact their own laws, leading to uncertainty and additional expense for trademark owners seeking to protect the value of their trademarks. The administration, howev r, has not threatened to veto the legislation. Creative community lobbyists argue that the bill is necessary. "It would protect the integrity of individual names," said Margaret Cone, a lobbyist for a coalition of entertainment figures. "Famous people's names cannot be hijacked for ransom or turned into porno sites." Studio execs applauded the House action. "We congratulate the sponsor of this bill," MPAA chief Jack Valenti said. "It's long overdue and we applaud its passage."
~springnet #104
I'm going to be "springnet" on here starting now. OK?
