I'm new here, too. I just want to know if there is a way to use the internet if you have a modem on a personal computer without the high long distance charges. I am new to the internet and this whole concept of electronic communication, nd just discovered it at the library. I have a computer at home with a modem but don't know how to use it except to send a fax. Can anyone help me?

If you need some hand holding and don't mind paying for it, you can contact one of the online services like America On Line.
The better route, however, is to contact a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) and get yourself set up with a SLIP or PPP connection. If you're running Windows 95, the latter should should be relatively easy since the drivers and Winsock stack are already in the system. Very often the ISP can provide the needed software and instructions as well. Both protocols are essentially methods by which the system is able to use the modem as if it were a network adapter card, albeit a slow one, but it works.
If you live in an area where such access is long distance no matter what, you might just be better off going through the library until such time as some form of local access materializes. In the next few years, it is likely that direct satelite link access will become more prevalent and two-way, at which point a lot of areas not currently served will get access at relatively reasonable rates.
