Good starting points: http://www.nua.ie/surveys/ and http://www.cyberatlas.com/ http://www.web21.com/home.chtml which lists the top 100 sites, but I find it hard to believe that Tucows is on the list and Stroud isn't even listed. And there's no category for online communities that I can find as of yet.

On http://www.nua.ie/surveys/index.cgi?blocknumber=17 I found this: Business Week : Net A Home From Home Apr 28 1997: According to a new Business Week /Harris Poll, 57% of those on the Net go to the same sites repeatedly instead of wandering from one to the next. And of the 89% who use E-mail, nearly one-third consider themselves part of an online community. 42% of those involved in an online community say it is related to their profession, while 35% say their community is a social group, and 18% say it revolves around a hobby. Just as in the physical world, Net newbies are gravitating to Web sites where they can find friends and feel comfortable. Adding a way for web surfers to chat can consistently boosts traffic on any Web site by as much as 50%. But the link didn't find it, maybe it's buried somewhere in the site? I did look at the web21 site and finally found: http://www.web21.com/home.chtml which lists the top 100 sites, but I find it hard to believe that Tucows is on the list and Stroud isn't even listed. And there's no category for online communities. Where would you find listings of online communities?
